The Green Flag Programme

The fourth class in Scoil an Chroi Ro Naofa currently involed in a waste reduction and recycling campaign within the school. Twice weekly a team of eight pupils collect all the waste paper, plastic,tetra-pak and compost within the school. All the recycable material is brought to the waste transfer station and the compost is distributed locally for animal feed. They have even gone to the bother of weighing all the material which amounted to a staggering 20Kg in a week alone. In one month 80Kg, one year 740Kg. It is 65c per Kg therefore the cost of this is €481 per year. They are currently applying for a Green Flag for the school with everybody's full cooperation they will no doubt be successful with their application. Most young people care deeply about environmental issues and wish to make a positive change in the environment around them. The Green Schools programme provides an ideal way for fostering environmental awareness in the entire school in a way links to many curriculum subjects.
