Robertstown

Location: Robertstown, Co. Kildare

Robertstown / Baile Riobaird
Robertstown is one of the most charming of the little towns centered on the Grand Canal, which runs from the centre of Dublin city all the way to the river Shannon. With the Royal Canal, which cuts through Kildare near its northern border with county Meath, they were once important through fares. The Grand Canal carried some 100,000 passengers a year up to the mid 1800’s, and was used by freight barges up to the 1960s. Now the waterways have no commercial purpose, but they still provide recreation: both are used by coarse fishermen, and Robertstown is a base for canal cruises.
