The present Belclare Church, dedicated to the Sacred Heart, was built in 1924.
It replaced an older church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, situated 200 yards away in a place called Churchfriar which was the site of an ancient Franciscan monastery founded with the help of the De Burgo's in 1291.
