Self portrait project

SPECIALS August 2000

This project's underlying concepts are cultural identity and self-expression. Participants of the workshop are asked to document their favourite food through drawing and painting. These pictures will then be framed and given to restaurants around Sarajevo which, in return, will prepare this special meal for the child and their friend (celebration).

"My art is based on issues of human well-being (mental and physical). The idea for this project is a result of a long engagement with portraiture which requires concern about the Other and makes that person feel special. This particular project plays with the idea of self-portraiture and should foster self-esteem as well as creative expression. We all, as living beings, must eat to survive. Besides the necessity for survival, food and eating are the source of great pleasure and contentment. They are, furthermore, central to our sense of self and worthy of cultural interpretation.

A collaborative aspect of the project is given through the gift exchange between child and chef (restaurant) and places the individual as part of society."
