BIRR RFC LAST SEASON
Last year was a successful year for Birr R.F.C. in the Leinster and Midland Leagues. Following several poor seasons the club has rebuilt it's 1st XV and 2nd XV and last year with the coaching by Willie Burns and the efforts put in at training the club reaped the rewards. The 1st XV won the Leinster League Division 4 and the Midland League Division 2 with a 100% record while also keeping a clean sheet in preventing anyone from crossing their line. This was the first League win for Birr R.F.C. since 1966,which gave the team confidence going into the Towns Cup competition where they were eventually to go out to Kilkenny in the quarterfinal.
THE FORTHCOMING SEASON
Training for the forthcoming season began in July with several new faces joining the squad. Among the new faces on the training field is the new coach Pat Whelan. Pat is a member of Nenagh R.F.C. who has vast experience in coaching. While lending his expertise to Birr he is also committed to the Munster and Irish Youth teams. His knowledge and coaching ability will be a benefit to the club and players both old and new. Any person who feels like learning to play rugby or who has played before and would like to get back into the game is most welcome to come along any Tuesday and Friday night.
This year Birr R.F.C. will compete in Division 3 of the Leinster League and Division 1 of the Midland League. The 1st XV will play their first game of the season on 09 Sept 01 against Roscrea while the 2nd XV have their first outing against Wexford on 07 Oct 01. The Club would like to thank the supporters who followed the teams last year and look forward to their continued support this year.
