Orienteering Events for 2007-8

CORK SCHOOLS LEAGUE (3 Events)
(Primary & Secondary, organised by CSOA.  All 3 events to count.
The first three of each category in the overall results get their entry paid for the Irish Champs and the winners of the PJC Boys & Girls league get further assistance if they compete abroad.
Entry Fee € 2 (€ 1 for Introductory Course)

The following events are open to all affiliated Primary & Secondary level schools in Ireland (combined affiliation fees to the above Associations €5 per school Sept 2007 to August 2008). Start times 10am to 1pm & Closing Time 2 pm. All schools must be currently affiliated to CSOA / MSOA / ISOA prior to the events, otherwise they will be classified as non-competitive and will not qualify for any titles or trophies. All perpetual trophies to be returned on the morning of the championships. Pairs and more are classified as non-competitive. All cheques payable to Schools Orienteering Association.

CATEGORIES
Primary School Girls; Primary School Boys (including Mixed teams); First Year Girls; First Year Boys; Second & Third Year Girls; Second & Third Year Boys; Post Junior Certificate (including Transition Years) Girls; Post Junior Certificate (including Transition Years) Boys.     
Introductory / Non-Competitive Courses
available for beginners at league events only and are looked after by the teacher-in-charge or Senior Student.  Schools should not allow students out on the competitive courses without basic proficiency.
All non-competitive students to be on the Introductory Course only.                                                

TEAM & INDIVIDUAL COMPETITIONS
 The four best finishers per school per category to count for team purposes (times added).
Team members will be separated by a min. of 3 minutes.


WHAT TO BRING
Students should bring a
red biro, clear plastic bag (A4 size or larger in order to protect the map) and a change of clothes. No food or drinks allowed out on the course. If food is brought make sure you take home all litter. Smoking is not allowed. Interference with Controls will automatically result in disqualification.

GENERAL
Schools are expected to provide adequate supervision for their own pupils and advise them regarding their obligations towards the Country Code.  Under the Health & Safety Act and Child Safety Acts, the participating schools should be aware that the onus is on the school (and the teachers in charge of the participating students) for the responsibility of its students while out at the orienteering competitions. At least two teachers should accompany the school to the event and one of them should go around the course in the wood on patrol.
This could also be used as an instruction exercise.

Schools must be affiliated (€5 annual affiliation fee) and Teacher-in-charge must sign affiliation form.

The above events will contribute towards the new Junior Cert. Geography Course (Map-reading skills, etc)
and the PE Course Transition Year Programme.

Orienteering is an adventure sport and can be dangerous. Students take part at their own risk.
Please ensure that your students are covered by your School Insurance policy for the day.


Members of CSOA are available to introduce Orienteering to Schools as well as the making of
simple B&W or coloured orienteering maps of school grounds and nearby parks, & woods.

Orienteering videos available for a maximum of 14 days from CSOA secretary.

MAPS: Blank maps, control cards, control description sheets, and master maps available one week in advance from Sean Cotter.

CORK CITY COUNCIL'S PERMANENT ORIENTEERING COURSES

Cork City Council in conjunction with Cork Schools Orienteering Association & Bishopstown Orienteering Club has set up six permanent orienteering courses in Cork City at The Glen Amenity Park, Clashduv Park, Murphy’s Farm,
The Marina Park, Tory Top Park, Beaumont Park and Lee Fields / Curraheen River
.

Maps and instruction sheets can be obtained from SC or from Eucharia Savage, Sports and Community Facilities Development Officer, Cork City Council's Recreation, Amenity & Culture Department, Cork City Hall  (Tel 021- 4924741).
