Bray left wandering

Shelbourne 4-1 Bray Wanderers
Defending eircom League champions gave newcomers Bray Wanderers a lesson at Tolka Park last night as Pat Fenlon’s side recorded a comfortable 4-1 win.

It was a harsh lesson for the Seagulls, who had started the season so brightly. However, they can take heart from the fact that the best side in the country defeated them.

Shels’ Richie Baker knocked in his fifth and sixth goals of the season, while Wes Hoolahan and Jason Byrne also chipped during the comfortable win. Bray striker Eamon Zayed had earlier equalised for the visitors.

It only took five minutes for new signing Byrne to open his account. The former New England Revolution star was a constant threat to the Bray defence. Byrne was also involved in Shels’ second goal. A cracking strike by Wes Hoolahan on the stroke of half time to cancel out Zayed’s equaliser.

Shels continued to pile on the pressure in the second half and just six minutes after the interval, last season’s top scorer Jason Byrne made it 3-1.

The Reds go into Monday night’s Setanta Cup clash with Cork City full of confidence and top of the table by three points. However, they will be without Glen Crowe, who suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury during Friday night’s win.

Shelbourne: Williams, Heary, Crawley, Rogers, Hawkins, Ryan, Baker, S Byrne, Hoolahan (Cahill, 69mins), J Byrne (Moore, 80mins), Crowe (Harris 36mins).

Bray: O’Connor, Tresson, O’Reilly, Keogh, Charles, Ryan (Gifford, 55), Fox, Zayed, James, Long, Kelch (McGuinness, 55).

First half double-whammy helps Bray back to winning ways

Bray Wanderers 2-1 Waterford United
Bray Wanderers bounced back from their first defeat of the season last weekend to climb to within three points of leaders Shelbourne with a come-from-behind victory in Friday’s delayed Premier Division clash at the Carlisle Grounds.

The game looked destined to be abandoned before it began after a floodlight failure, but it eventually got under way an hour later than scheduled.

The home side were quickly in their stride, striker Eamon Zayed missing two decent early chances to put them ahead.

And they rued those spurned opportunities when defender Pat Purcell rose to head a corner past goalkeeper Chris O’Connor after 18 minutes to give Waterford the lead.

The Blues continued to have the better of the exchanges – but two quick goals largely against the run of play turned the game on its head.

First, on 41 minutes, midfielder Ciaran Ryan sent a powerful long-range drive past the despairing Packie Holden and just as the half ticked into injury time, Zayed made amends for his earlier misses by firing to the net after being found by skipper Jody Lynch.

Lynch was dismissed by referee Eddie Barr late in the second half, but there was no way back for Waterford and Bray held on until the 10.25pm finish to extend their formidable record at the Carlisle Grounds, where they haven’t been beaten in 20 games.

Rovers put four past Bray

Blackburn Rovers ended their pre-season campaign with a convincing victory over the Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds.

First-half goals by Barry Ferguson and Jonathan Stead were added to in the second half by Nils-Eric Johansson and Lorenzo Amoruso.

The eircom League outfit were not overawed by their Barclays Premiership visitors and Lucas Neill had to hack the ball off the line from Eamon Zayed before Colm James forced Peter Enckelman into a parry.

Rovers took control from then on and took a 28th-minute lead when Ferguson twisted and turned from a Javier de Pedro corner before curling a shot in off the post.

Graeme Souness' charges doubled their lead on half-time when Stead bundled home Jonathan Douglas' centre from the left.

Johansson added the third on 56 before de Pedro, Brett Emerton and Paul Gallagher all spurned chances to score.

Amoruso added a fourth in the 74th minute after a goalmouth scramble.

Bray flop in Galway

United shock Bray

Galway Utd 3-1 Bray Wanderers
High-flying Bray Wanderers were on the receiving end of a shock 1-3 setback in the Eircom First Division last night (Friday) when hosts Galway United played some of their best football of the season.

Damien Dupuy got the homesters up and running in the 27th minute and then David O’Dowd scored his first goal for the Tribesmen 13 minutes later in a whirlwind opening half for the westerners.

Bray went further into trouble in the 35th minute when John Flood received a straight red card after tangling with Nigel Keady.

Bray improved on the restart though and got back into the game on 65 minutes with a goal by Alan Gough from all of 25 yards.

Wanderers pushed for an equaliser thereafter but they were instead caught by a swift Galway counter attack which saw Dupuy netting again to put the issue beyond doubt two minutes into injury time.

Kilkenny stun understrength Bray

Bray Wanderers 0 – 2 Kilkenny City (RESULT)

Both sides took a while to get going, before Kilkenny took command of proceedings on Friday evening in their FAI Carlsberg Cup tie by taking the lead 6 minutes before the break against Bray at the Carlisle Grounds.

The two sides had met twice already this season with one game ending in a draw and the other being a close victory for Bray.

But it was John Shanahan who provided the cross to Alan Mulcahy at the back post, and Mulcahy didn’t disappoint with his superb diving header.

Bray tried to get back in the second half, but despite their chances the Cats settled matters with their second goal on the hour mark.

After some good work from Damien Cooney on the wing, Philip Gorman tapped home past Chris O'Connor outing the tie out of Kilkenny’s reach.

Bray srape past Sad Limerick

BRAY WANDERERS 2

LIMERICK FC 0

ALTHOUGH far from convincing against badly-depleted opposition, Bray Wanderers moved back to the top of the First Division at the Carlisle Grounds last night.

One had to feel some sympathy for the visitors who were down to the bare bones and unable to field any substitutes.

Stephen Fox got the opening goal after 11 minutes, the Bray midfielder heading home a superb left-wing cross from Keith Long.

Eamon Zayed doubled the lead with a real cracker in the 34th minute, completing a mazy dribble with a blistering 20-yard drive into the far corner of the net.

Limerick's woes continued when Jimmy Fyffe, normally a goalkeeper but playing here as a striker, was sent off for a second bookable offence after 75 minutes.

They did have a chance to pull a goal back 10 minutes from time when Bray defender Wesley Charles handled in the box, but Jonathan Mernagh's penalty was brilliantly saved by Chris O'Connor.

Bray earn vital Away Point

Sligo Rovers 0-0 Bray Wanderers
Under caretaker manager Leo Tierney, Sligo Rovers managed to halt the flow of goals at their end, but their increased defensive fortitude ensured meant they were unable to break down a Bray side that remains just three points off the top of the table.

Wanderers had a chance to close the gap on leaders UCD to just one after College and third-placed Finn Harps played out a 1-1 draw on Friday night.

However, they were unable to force the issue against Rovers, even after the home side were reduced to 10 men in the 78th minute with the dismissal of defender Gerry Carr.

Strikers Paul McTiernan and Stephen Mullen produced the best moments for a Sligo side that parted company with manager Don O’Riordan in midweek after two disappointing defeats, but both sides had to settle for a point in the end.

Sligo Rovers: O’Malley, Purcell, Hedderman, Carr, Sheridan, Mullen, Miller, Neary, Foley, Carthy, McTiernan.

Bray Wanderers: O’Connor, Tresson, Farrell, O’Reilly (Ryan, 17), Lynch, Fox, Gormley, Long, Lawless (O’Brien, 67), Grogan (Flood, 88), Zayed.

Bray Keep up the Pressure

Bray Wanderers 3-0 Cobh Ramblers
Bray Wanderers kept up the pressure on leaders UCD with a cosy victory over an understrength Cobh Ramblers side at the Carlisle Grounds on Friday night.

Bray had fallen three points behind the Students by losing to them a week ago, but their two defeats at the hands of Pete Mahon’s side remain their only reverses so far this season.

Colm Tresson, fill in at the back in the absence of several first-choice defenders, netted direct from a free kick after nine minutes, and goals from Eamon Zayed midway through the second half and Ciaran Ryan just before the end sealed a comfortable win against Cobh, who were without captain Steve Yelverton and main striker Kieran O’Reilly due to the former’s wedding, for which O’Reilly was best man.

Bray Wanderers: O’Connor, Gifford, Long, Tresson, O’Reilly, McGuinness (Farrell, 33 (Manley, 77)), Fox, Lawless, Ryan, Grogan (Flood, 84), Zayed.

Cobh Ramblers: Cuthbert, O’Donovan, Meade, Andrews, Wolfe, Moore, Conlon (O’Shea, 70), Cummins, White (Lougheed, 60), Brosnan, Warren.

Referee: P. Tuite (Dublin).
