The United
Irishwomens Association was formed in Bree on 15th June 1910, by the late
Mrs. Annita
Lett. The aims of the association were:
· To
educate the rural women in the arts and crafts of our native land.
· To strive for a better standard of living.
To provide social, educational and recreational opportunities for the women of Ireland.
We are now known as the Irish Countrywomen's Association having changed our name in 1935 due to the political climate at that time. Having 16,000 members the ICA is now represented in every county in Ireland.
The Association was formed in St Aidans Hall in Bree, which was demolished after the present Community Centre was built
