The
Management Committee and Staff of Brí Beag, along with the Bree Community Development
Group Ltd., would like to express our thanks and appreciation to all those who helped
to make the occasion of President Mary McAleese's visit to Bree such a resounding
success. Her arrival on Wednesday 15th June 2011 marked the first time a President
has visited the village, and a large and enthusiastic crowd was there to welcome her.
She remarked on the glorious sunshine, and thanked the "Weather Committee"
for ensuring that the sunny South-East lived up to its name. After cutting the ribbon and
declaring Brí Beag Childcare Facility officially open, she took a brief tour of the
building, visiting playschools, the Baby room and the Toddler room. She was greeted
by smiling, chatty and curious children, who also showed a great interest in the Colonel
in full dress uniform, who accompanied her as her aide-de-camp. After touring the
building, she took her place on the colourfully-decorated stage, and Sinead Parnell,
Secretary of the Brí Beag Management Committee, welcomed her to Bree and spoke about how
the project had come to fruition. The President then spoke for about ten minutes,
entertaining the crowd with a warm and witty speech, in which she recalled childhood
memories and spoke of her large family. Paud Moriarty, Chairperson of the Bree
Community Development Group Ltd, then thanked President McAleese for coming to visit the
childcare centre, and spoke about the many organisations that are based in the village of
Bree, and the spirit of community and volunteerism that is to be found here. Following his
speech, four of the Naíonra children presented An Uachtaráin with mementos of her visit,
and she spent time meeting the parishioners who had come to the village to welcome her.
Father Kavanagh was there to shake hands with her and take part in the official
photographs, and our memories of the day are all the more precious and poignant to us now
with his passing. During the time of his funeral, so many people spoke about his
pride in seeing the President of Ireland coming to his village, and his joy in meeting
her. We would like to thank most sincerely
all who helped with the preparation for the Presidential visit, and those who helped on
the day. These include the ICA, who did all the catering; Fintan Kinsella and the Rowing
Club, who organised the parking; Brendan Byrne for supplying the traffic cones; Elaine and
all the FAS staff, who worked so hard in getting the Hall and grounds ready that day;
Martin Humphrey and Perennial Freight for providing the trailer/stage and all his help on
the day; David Minogue for making the steps for the stage; Syl Doyle of Wilton Gardens for
lending us all the beautiful plants and greenery; Lorna Lawlor of Buds in Bloom for
providing the wonderful bouquets of flowers; Stephen Donohue for setting up and running
the sound system and music; Clare Doyle for taking all the photographs; Billy Whelan,
Michael Nolan and all the men who put up the flags and bunting; Padraig Doyle for helping
with his teleporter; Willie O'Gorman for supplying his tractor; the initial organisation
committee who helped with all the preparation and allocation of jobs; Essie Morris, Ann
Murphy and the Fifth and Sixth Class pupils who formed such a lovely guard of honour on
the day; John Joe Fitzgerald for all his help; Gillian and Grainne Byrne for cleaning all
the windows of Brí Beag the day before; the Tidy Towns Committee who ensured that the
village was looking its sparkling best on the day; the Garda Siochana for their help; the
parents of the children of Brí Beag for their support and help; all those who donated
cakes; the local community for the continued support and help; the children of Brí Beag
who behaved so well, smiled so beautifully and made us very proud on the day. Go
raibh mile maith agaibh go léir.

The committee would like to thank everyone, especially
our Fás workers, who have helped us over the last year to make great improvements in the
village and surrounding areas. New flower beds, the water pump, the water feature and
sensory garden in Dick Joynts Memorial
Garden, new seats, our restoration project on Bree lane, the improvements and flower beds
in the new graveyard, and reseeding, new beech hedging, flower pots and beds at the
Community Centre, all have enhanced the area. The
results of the Tidy Towns Competition were announced during the week and Pobal Brí/Bree
Community Tidy towns improved our score to 274, an increase of 5 marks on 2010. As always we hope to improve on this next year and
in the coming months we hope to set up a volunteer group to meet once a week to help keep
everything in order.

The Ballyhogue G.A.A. Lotto continues to grow in size as
there was no Jackpot winner this week. There were however four match three winners, Liam
Maher Snr., Mgt. Broaders, Noel Keeley and Bill Carr. The next draw will take place in
Ryan's of Galbally on Sept. 21st. Thanks to all for the ongoing support.
In games news the Intermediate footballers are through to
the 1/4 finals of the Championship which is due to be played on the weekend of Sept 24th.
Unfortunately the Junior footballers were recently eliminated in the District Final by
Starlights but there is now a chance to even the score as our Junior Hurlers face the
Rapps this weekend in the District Final. Best of luck.
In underage our U-21s were knocked out in a close
encounter with neighbours Cloughbawn, while on a more positive note the U-14s have
qualified for their final after beating Oylegate on Tuesday night. We wish them all the
best in the final and hope they will be joined by the minor footballers who also play
Oylegate in their semi this Thursday (Sept. 8th) evening.
