INTRODUCING THE NEW MISSAL

Sunday 24th July - What differences can we expect in November 2011?
From 27 November, the First Sunday of Advent, congregations and priests will use the texts of the new edition of the Roman Missal for the celebration of Mass. While the structure, actions and pattern of the Mass will remain the same and the readings will be unchanged, the texts of recited prayers will sound different to our ears. Over time, as the new style of language becomes familiar to us, it is very much hoped that we will come to appreciate both the richness and depth of our prayer at Mass.

What should we, as a faith community, reflect on as we prepare to use the new Missal?

We have been praying our current texts for over thirty-five years. Moving to new texts will be a challenge and will require that we exercise patience and support for one another. Priests and people, musicians and others involved in preparing the liturgy all need to work together to make the change as easy as it can be.

Ultimately we need to remember that the words of our liturgy are crucial – we pray as we believe. But when we pray the Mass we do more than recite words – those words are recited in the context of all the actions, symbols and people of the liturgy. As we work towards implementing the changes, may we keep in mind the bigger task of which the words of the Missal are a part: namely, the Mystery of our Faith, the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ made present for us in the Eucharist.

RESPONSE TO THE CLOYNE REPORT

Bishop Denis Brennan issued a letter last weekend in response to the Cloyne Report He writes “ I share with you- and with all right minded citizens and believers- the terrible shame, as has been occasioned afresh, by the revelations of abuse and mismanagement, as have come to light following the publication of the Cloyne Report. Yet again, my first thoughts are with the victims and with their families, and with all of you who again feel sorely shocked and let down”.  “I would like to take this opportunity to restate to you my knowledge and assurance that all safeguarding children allegations and concerns in the Diocese of Ferns –as have been reported to us in the diocesan office- have been fully shared with the diocesan advisory panel/ the Gardai / the HSE and the National Office. All the recommendations received by the diocese from these bodies have been implemented”.  A complete copy of the letter is on the notice board and copies are available in the sacristy

FAMINE IN EAST AFRICA

In response to the famine in Somalia, Bishop Denis Brennan has decided to hold a collection this weekend in order to alleviate the plight of millions suffering from the devastating effects of drought in East Africa. In Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, famine is emerging because of the failure of the seasonal rains over the last two years. Now more than 12 million are at serious risk, over half of them children. Each week the situation is steadily worsening. The town of Dollow on the Somalia/Ethiopian border is a case in point. There are now 1,700 Somalis crossing into Ethiopia on a daily basis. Trocaire runs a health centre for mothers and their children in this town. Any contributions that can be made will assist to alleviate the suffering of those in greatest need. Thank you

(A box is placed at the entrance of the Church; whatever is given is gratefully received and appreciated.)
