Co. Championship draws
Ardara to meet St.Eunan's in first round
By Peter Campbell

They said it couldn't happen again. But just like last year, the county finalists were drawn in the first round of the 'Donegal Democrat' Senior Championship when the draw was made on Sunday night.

Action from last year's county final between Ardara and St.Eunan's. Amazingly both teams have been drawn to play each other in the first round of this year's senior championship.

A large crowd attended at the Abby Hotel as Seamus McGeady from Raidio na Gaeltachta called the pairings and when the fifth pairing was called St.Eunan's were drawn at home to champions, Ardara.
The draw, as usual, has a so-called strong half and the so-called weaker half. In the 'strong' half this year are Ardara, St.Eunan's, Kilcar, Dungloe, Naomh Chonaill, St.Naul's and Burt and Termon.
The charge of fixing cannot be levelled against County chairman, John McConnell, who drew the home teams, and fellow clubman, Edward Molloy, who drew the away teams.
McConnell was seen to wince when the pairing was named but afterwards he admitted that he hadn't ruled it out: "It crossed my mind that this could happen. It is a very tough match for both teams. There are no easy games in the championship but you always look for a game you would fancy winning in the first round and build from that.
"It means that both teams will have to be at 100% for the first round and can't look past that."
"Patrick (Gallagher) has the poisoned chalice this year, but he did a very good job in 1998 and 1999 when he was manager before. We won an All-Ireland Gaeltacht title and we were narrowly beaten by Ballyshannon in a county semi-final by a point and St.Eunan's put us out in '99. Patrick knows what it is all about and he'll not be far away.

Patrick Gallagher back with Ardara
By Peter Campbell

Donegal senior champions, Ardara, will have a 'new' man in charge for their defence, but he has been there before.
Patrick Gallagher, who was manager in 1999, is back in charge after Johnny D Earley signalled his intent to stand down after the side had their best ever year, winning the league and championship.
Gallagher has been involved with Ardara since the mid-eighties and played a part as a player and player-manager since then. He has the distinction of being the first All-Ireland winning captain of a Donegal team in Croke Park, when he captained the Vocational Schools team in 1984.
He has not yet named his backroom team but his aim will be the retention of the county championship for Ardara. He will be looking forward with interest to the championship draws which take place on Sunday next.
