On Monday August 16th we had a great win in the Under 16 Hurling Championship against St.Catherines’ at Castlelyons. In the first half playing against a slight breeze we were slow to start with the “Saints” registering six points before Stephen Walsh opened our scoring in the 14th minute with a well taken point. Vinnie O’Keeffe followed up by soloing through from the forty meter line to score a fine goal. At this stage we trailed 1-1 to 0-6. Our forwards began to improve their play, four further points by Daniel O’Brien (2), Vinnie O’Keeffe and Philip Butler left us leading at the break by the minimum. Vinnie O’Keeffe opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play in the opening minute. In the fourth minute we were awarded a 60 meter free, Liam Forde took the free and the high ball went all the way to the net to leave Rovers leading 2-6 to 0-7. Shane Cotter, St.Catherines, top scorer responded with two points to leave one goal between the sides. Then, in the 10th minute the score of the match came from Stephen Walsh who burst through the Catherines’ defence shaking off all challengers to score a super goal, 3-6 to 0-9. Daniel O’Brien pointed in the 11th minute followed by a Vinnie O’Keeffe point. Rovers had now taken over with Stephen Walsh pointing from a free and Vinnie from 40 meters. In the closing minutes Shane Cotter goaled from a 20 meter free to leave the final score 3-10 to 1-9. This was a workman like performance however our slow start was a concern.
