From the Principal's Desk

St. Brigid's National School, Castleknock, Dublin 15, was opened in 1865. Initially it was a two teacher co-educational school. The original register is still in the school archives. The records show that the majority of pupils were children of employees of the local land owners particularly Lord Moyne and Lord Iveagh - carpenters, ploughmen, millers, farmers, blacksmiths, hunters, shoemakers, herdsmen, gardeners, dealers, masons, coachmen, grooms etc.

On St. Brigid's Feast Day, February 1st, 1971, we moved to our present building - a new 8 teacher school. The school grew rapidly and in 1980 and 1986 new buildings were added on to replace the dingy prefabs in use.

At present, 1999, we have 33 teachers on our staff and 831 pupils. This large staff includes Principal, Deputy Principal, Resource Teacher, 2 Remedial Teachers and 29 class teachers.

St. Brigid's Board of Management consists of 4 nominees of our patron, including Fr. Diarmuid Connolly P.P., 2 elected parents and 2 teachers.

We also have a very active Parent - Teacher Association, founded in 1973, composed of 10 elected parents and 5 volunteer teachers.

Our principal aim is to challenge, stimulate and encourage each pupil to reach their full potential in an environment where children and teachers are secure and happy.
