An Examination of Conscience
Everything is summed up in the two great commandments:
LOVE GOD.
LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR (AS YOURSELF).
Some like to use the ten commandments as aids. These suggestions are perhaps different.
All sin begins with SELFISHNESS...
God
- Do I choose myself before God?
- Do I neglect prayer time?
- Do I neglect Mass?
- Do I seek his will?
- Do I spread his word?
- Do I show his love and care in my life and actions'?
- Do I deny him, doubt him, and blaspheme against him?
- Do I live like Christ in poverty, accept rejection?
- Do I fast and do penance?
- Do I love him?
Neighbour
- Do I know my neighbour ... or want to know him?
- Do I seek out the poor and help them?
- Am I concerned about the Third World, starvation?
- Do I visit the sick, those in prison?
- Do I take part in groups or parish activities?
- Am I concerned about local or national politics, laws on abortion or euthanasia, racial discrimination, housing, and so on?
- Do I help young people in clubs, groups, etc.?
- Do I help the old and lonely?
- Do I respect my neighbour - property, good name?
- Do I love my neighbour properly - affection, love, sex?
Myself
- Do I give God enough of myself?
- Do I give time to think out where I am going?
- Do I try to learn more about God by reading, groups, listening to talks, discussions?
- Do I discipline myself in my sexual habits, in eating and drinking, smoking, all self-indulgence?
- Do I listen? (actively not passively)
- Do I give in to pride lying, anger, and so on?
These thoughts are just to stir you. Sit openly and think/pray your life through, your relationship with God, with nature, with man.
Admit your failings before God - and increase your spiritual strength in an uncertain world.
