Prayer and Praying

The whole object of praying is to open ourselves to the working of God's Spirit within us. He moves as he will in our minds, hearts and emotions. Far the greater work is done by Him; much of our positive action is holding ourselves open, willing our will to be one with God's will - Love.

Saying prayers can be a great help towards this union, and will normally remain to some extent part of each person's life until they reach the perfect unity of heaven. Some traditionally feel unable to go beyond vocal prayers to practice meditation and contemplation, but each of us can learn to be silent and accepting in God’s presence; or, if finding difficulty in praying alone, we may find a new vision and dimension in a group of others similarly searching.

But recited words, concentration on the work of the mind in meditation and so on, can imprison us and even prevent the free working of the Spirit. Pray the courage to let go.

Each of us should pray, live and work and be still towards the glory, joy and praise of contemplation. Do not be afraid. But seek guidance from a holy person who can help you, priest or layperson.

Then with Our Lady may we all say or sing:

The Lord has done marvels for me

Holy is his name
