THERE are no plans to release Brittas Bay killer John Shaw in the near future, prison sources have confirmed.
Newspaper reports in recent days claimed that Shaw (59) - who has been in jail since 1978 for the rape and murder of two women - was getting ready for release.
He was given life almost 25 years ago, along with fellow Englishman Geoffrey Evans, for murdering Dubliner Elizabeth Plunkett after she left a Brittas Bay pub while on holidays in the area, and for the murder of Mary Duffy in Mayo.
However, contrary to the media stories, which indicated that Shaw was moved from Arbour Hill prison to Castlerea prison in the last few weeks, the notorious killer and rapist was actually transferred almost a full year ago.
'The families of the victims were ringing up very upset after reading this, naturally enough, because they said they had not been told he was going to be released', said a high-level prison service source. 'They weren't told because it isn't happening.'
Wicklow people have vivid memories of the events of 1978, when Elizabeth Plunkett (23) went missing after leaving a pub in Brittas Bay before her body was recovered from the sea.
