Prehistoric Music Ireland are licensed by the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) and The Heritage Council to present the story of the prehistoric musical instruments of Ireland in Primary or National schools around Ireland to children between the ages of 5 and 12. The presentation begins with the earliest habitation and progresses through the ages with a series of stories and tunes that are played on appropriate instruments at given times.
The instruments include stone and bone whistles,
stone percussion, musical bow, animal horns, bodhrán , bronze
horns,
Celtic trumpas and Early Medieval horns. The story ends with the coming
of St. Patrick and the beginning of history. Children are encouraged to participate
and answer questions throughout. The number of children who attend a presentation
may vary from ten up to a maximum of 50 and it will normally run for
an hour and a half. Since 2002, Prehistoric Music Ireland has visited
more than a 100 schools. The combination of story, music and imagery
is an effective way to bring the ancient past to life and gives the children
a sense of the passing of time and the evolvement of the people.
To book a workshop with Prehistoric Music Ireland for your school, please see our contact us page and also the Heritage in Schools Programme which is sent to all schools by the INTO. The workshop is mostly funded by The Heritage Council and the school pays a small fee towards each workshop. See the About us page for further information about Prehistoric Music Ireland.
