Caheragh ICA
Caheragh ICA are, this year, celebrating 21 years of success. We
have been active in a wide range of activities and have had about
30 members over the years. One of our members, Catherine Mullhall,
is vice-president for West Cork.
ACTIVITIES
Caheragh ICA, each year, hold a very popular sports dayfor the
children of the parish. This is unique, as we are the only guild
to hold such an event.
We won the West Cork table quiz, recently held in Schull, and now
go on to the County final in Ballinhassig. Also, in Schull, many
members won prizes for their baking.
Many prizes have been won for Set-dancing and Ballad singing. At
the moment some of us are doing courses in swimming,
some are doing a personal health course. Courses in computers and
flower arranging have been completed. The Annual Outing, this
year, was a cruise on Kenmare Bay followed by a trip to the Gap
of Dunloe and Kate Kearnie's Cottage. We had a wonderful meal in
The Eccles Hotel, Glengarriff on the way home.
The objectives of the association are; "to bring together women in fellowship and through co-operative effort to develop and improve the standard of rural and urban life in Ireland, having due regard for our Irish culture, and to encourage the use of the Irish Language in the affairs of Banntracht na Tuaithe" The ICA have an adult education college in Thermonfecin, Co Louth, called "An Grinan". Each year members of Caheragh guild attend, doing courses such as, art, crafts, flower arranging etc.
The ICA also have their own Councelling Psychologist, Regina Martin, who is available to members at the cost of a phone call. This has a very supporting role in the lives of ICA members who call on it.
There are also many different committees in the ICA, such as Social Affairs, Education and Cultural Affairs, Horticulture, Family Counselling, Promotion of Irish, Sports and Leisure.
Companionship is very important in the ICA.
