It will be launched Mr. Tony Walsh, former Director of Services at Kilkenny Co. Council. Patrick Lydon of the Camphill Communities will chair the proceedings. It is a limited edition – 800 copies only. So come along on the night to get the book at special pre-launch price. Tea will be served on the night. All are welcome. Progress Report on Church Roof:  part of Church Car Park Closed to traffic for about 2 more weeks.: Thanks to  the wonderful weather over this past week work is progressing very satisfactorily on the re-roofing project. One could not ask for more ideal weather conditions. This time last year work was under way on the roof of Coolagh Church and the weather was not  at  all kind. Most of the car park side should be ready for re-slating by this weekend with the slating beginning about the middle of next week. The work of re-slating the West St. side of the building has already been completed. A section of the car park area will be blocked off to parking for the duration of this work for another two weeks at least. We regret any inconvenience caused but it will be only for the shortest possible time. There is an abundance of alternative parking area available a short distance away.

As already posted funerals occurring during the week will take place in Coolagh or Newtown. Christenings as usual in Callan at weekend.

Upgrading of central heating system & new attic insulation: For the past year or more there were problems with the heating the parish church. After much trial and error the fault was located and then two of the radiators on the left hand side began to leak. During the week the defunct radiators were replaced with four new ones, better and more efficient we hope. These are in addition to most the up-to-date level of attic insulation installed in the past few weeks in conjunction with the work on the roof.

Euphoria as Chilean Miners are rescued : For a change the big story of the past week, if not for the past year, is a good news one – the remarkable  rescue of the trapped Chilean Miners from their dungeon more than a half mile  below the surface of the earth. It was remarkable combination of human endurance solidarity and engineering ingenuity. It proved the indomitable nature of the human spirit and show resilient it can be. It was all the more remarkable in that every   element of the operation was played out under the uninhibited glare of the world media. Many of the miners made no secret of how their faith in God helped to keep hope (esperanza) alive. At least one of them on emerging from the rescue capsule collapsed to his knees in prayer to thank God for his delivery. I’m sure many books and TV programmes will be made on this extraordinary  episode.

Cardinal Newman, as a result of his recent beatification, has received great attention lately.  It is well deserved.  On Monday 18th October at 8pm in St Patrick's Parish Centre, Kilkenny, the Rev. Dr. Thomas Norris, Professor Emeritus, Maynooth College,  will explore what Cardinal Newman's understanding of conscience can offer to our Church and Society today?  Cardinal Newman: Conscience, Church and Society:  What Cardinal Newman's understanding of conscience can offer to our Church and Society today?
