Summary of Castleblayney Community Enterprise Ltd

Background
Castleblayney Community Enterprise Ltd was formed in 1984 by a group of concerned people to help alleviate the problems brought about by high unemployment in the Castleblayney area.

The group set about the task of providing a suitable location where people from the area would have the opportunity to establish their own business, backed up with administration and business support services.

They achieved this objective in 1987, when they secured a lease from the parish for a building on the Dundalk Road (originally built in 1952 as a Boys National School) and converted it into an Enterprise Centre.

The old classrooms were converted into workspace units and support services were put in place.
Rents were offered at an affordable rate in order to make the Centre accessible to all sections of the community.

In December 1999 the group commenced a major refurbishment and extension to the Enterprise Centre building, at a cost of £400,000.  The works were completed in September 2000 and resulted in the provision of 3 extra workspace units, a board room and seminar room.

In 1995 eight years after its formation the group undertook a major flagship project which saught to eroct a modern food plant and Laboratory on lands outside the town of Castleblayney.  The project which involved a grassroots organisation working with National, European and inter national agencies was completed in 1999.  A Company named Meadowbrook took up occupancy of the Food plant and Microlabs Ltd. occupies the laboratory.

The established Aims and Objectives of the Board remain:
