History of Castle ffrench

Historical Background

Castle ffrench is an elegant ashlar-faced house of 3 storeys over a basement, built in 1779 by Sir Charles ffrench, Mayor of Galway.

Fanlighted and pilastered entrance

Castle ffrench is steeped in history as it was built as a replacement for a previous castle on a different site which itself replaced a castle built by the ffrench family soon after they bought the estate in late circa 16th century.

Castle ffrench portrays interior plasterwork of a style characteristic to County Galway, with it's delicate naturalistic foliage and flower swags. Foliage and trophies can be seen on the ceiling of the hall while Irish harps and other emblems are portrayed in the drawing room frieze. Flowers, foliage and birds have been carefully restored and are on display in the sideboard alcove of the dining room.
