Castlemartyr GAA

In this months feature we look back at the great 1935 hurling team that brought the first East Cork Hurling title back to Castlemartyr. It is especially appropriate as during the month Willie O Reilly, of Dromada, Ladysbridge passed away to his eternal reward. He was the last surviving member of this team and the photograph below which is sure to evoke many memories among older people who remember some of the characters and by young people who might find a grandfather, father or uncle among the squad.

This team became famous in the annals of Cork GAA when after winning the East Cork title the won their way to a county decider against Mayfield. This final turned into a saga with the first two games a draw, the third game was abondoned due to bad weather and the last games ended in dispute between the two sides. When the county board sat to decide the outcome they suspended both teams and no title was awarded for the year of 1935.

The full story of this saga and the characters involved will be told when our history book is completed and if you have a photograph or a story about any of these people we would be more than delighted to hear from you. In the meantime spare a thought for these great men who helped establish the club and for the recently deceased gentleman that was Willie O Reilly.
