Leaving Certificate Applied

This course started in the school in 1995 as an alternative to the traditional Leaving Certificate. It is a two year course also.

Below is a Leaving Certificate Year Two student account:

This year I am doing seven subjects. English, Maths, Irish, Construction Studies, Vocational Preparation, Tourism and Catering and Social Education. Last year I did German and Art instead of Irish and Construction Studies.

Instead of end of year exams, the class do many tasks (projects) over the two years. Last year one of our tasks was to organise a Sports Day for the first years. The money raised went to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. A total of €2200 was raised. This year, we have formed a Mini-Company called "Verbal Express". We produce Irish verb cards for pupils. For the Company, we had to be interviewed for certain jobs i.e. Personnel Manager, Managing Director etc.

On 16th/17th November our class accompanied by two teachers travelled to Hollywood, Co. Down to visit the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. This is part of another task. That night we went ice-skating and bowling in Dundonald. The next day we visited an RUC Barracks and had a workshop with two RUC officers. It helped us understand a lot more about Northern Ireland and the peace process.

I enjoy the Applied Leaving Certificate because I have a chance to do lots of different subjects. We have work experience one day a week and this gives us a chance to see what different jobs are like. There is less pressure on exams as we do so many tasks. To Top Of Page
