Our School

A Brief History of Our School

Cavan No.1 is situated on the junction of Farnham Street and Abbey Street. The school is a coeducational school with 36 children on roll. There are two permanent teachers and we share the services of a Learning Support Teacher with two other schools. The majority of children come from the Parishes of Cavan, Denn and Derryheen. The Principal is Ann Reilly and Barbara Lidwill is the Senior Class Teacher.

The Site:

A school exists here since the 1820's. Early records indicate that the boys and girls were taught in separate classrooms. The current school Roll books record the enrolement of girls from 1915 and boys from 1921.

A lease was drawnup between Lord Farnham who owns the site and the Diocesan Board of Education in the 1830's. This means that should the building cease to be an educational establishment the site will revert back to Lord Farnham. The building has two wings and a residence in between. One wing is used for the classrooms and one for the school hall. The wing currently used as the school was renovated in 1997 and has two classrooms, a staffroom and storeroom .It was officially reopened on Wednesday 3rd June 1997. The residence is in a state of disrepair, but plans have been drawn up to renovate the building which would provide extra accomodation for the school.

Our Crest:

The Owl was chosen as our crest because of the Irish 'ulchábhan' (An Owl) echoes An Chábhan (Cavan). An Cabhán means a hollow place. Cavan Town is situated between hills. The O'Reilly chieftains built their castle on Tullymongan Hill overlooking the town which developed below.

There is also a town in Brittany called Cavan. The locals there believe the name of their Cavan evolved from the idea of a place where owls gathered.
