Cliff Wedgbury’s career in folk music began in 1965, when he attended Bungies Folk Cellar in Central London, and was introduced to the world of traditional folk song by the late Peter Ballamy, and the contemporary folk scene by Al Stewart, to whose recently published biography he is an invited contributor. He has continued as a performance poet, guitarist, singer/songwriter ever since.
With other musicians and songwriters he contributed to the CD entitled ‘Sex, Sca and Sedition (The New Ballads) issued by Free State Records in 1998. His first collection of twelve original songs is entitled ‘Back to the Islands’. This was followed in 2006 by the release of fourteen new compositions entitled ‘Songs from a Soho Basement’.
Cliff’s composition ‘The Ballad of Tom Crean’ continues to attract a lot of radio airplay and has been covered by other artists. He was invited in Dec 2005 to perform his Antarctic Ballads on board Captain Scotts old ship R.R.S. Discovery in Dundee, Scotland at a special dinner for relatives of those early explorers. Another performance highlight was an invitation to sing at the unveiling of Tom Creans statue in Annascaul in 2004.
Cliff, as a keen member of the Tom Crean Society, is regularly invited to give his 1 hour performance piece ‘Tom Crean – A life in song and story’ at schools and libraries.
