Making Music

Project: Making Percussion instruments from recycled materials

Mr. Dennehy's Class 2002

Last week at school we were having a person in to make music with litter. His name is Phil Gaston. The first time I brought in a plastic container and two bottles and some rubber bands. We listened to an African singing. Some people forgot to bring some litter but Phil brought in some litter for the people who forgot to bring in litter. I put some rice other things into the container. Then I put some tape on it. The next day that Phil came in I put the two bottles beside each other and put some rubber bands around them.

I put rice into the bottles. Then we played jingle bells with our new instruments. Each of our two lessons lasted one hour and a half. I liked the music workshop.

We prepared for our first music lesson this year for at least three days. We brought litter into our class we were very excited about it. We had to bring household items that could be recycled. On the 4th of December a man called Phil Gaston came to the C.B.S our school. He came at 11:30am .He was very nice. He brought a big box of household items such as: Tins, Pea's, coffee beans, corks and sticks with old rags tied to it. He also brought Rainsticks. We made lots of instruments. Such as drums, shakers, and he hit sticks together to make some sounds. We learned rhymes to remind us of beats. We learned rashers and sausages. We played a tune called help our environment. We listened to an Indian woman who wanted a drum kit but her parents didn't think she was responsible enough so she had to remember beats to suit ever rhythm. We listened to the Japanese drummers. Phil left at 1:00. On Friday the 13th he returned to our school. He came at 11:45. We were looking forward to seeing him as much as the first time. On that day we made mostly made percussion instruments. I made a rainstick. We didn't play help our environment we played jingle bells except rewrote a tiny bit of the song. When he was copying it down from the Internet he saw two verses he'd never even heard of. We listened to the Indian woman except this time she had drums and she was playing them and someone else was playing the banjo. When Phil was going the whole class gave him either a big shake of their instruments or a big bang of their instruments. He had to go at 1:00 it was the best music class I ever had. I think everyone in my class really enjoyed it. I'd give it ten out of ten. Conor.
