Local Guides Training
The Copper Coast Geopark organised a training programme aimed at local
people, who wished to guide the public on the different sites along the coast.
The programme started in Spring 2006 and run for 5 weeks so the guides
were ready for the summer season. The training essentially consisted in
understanding the geology of the area and how to deliver it to the public.
The guides in return added elements of local history and wildlife. A refresher
week end course took place in 2007 so the guides were ready for the summer
walks.
Below is the list of the people who joined the training and have been doing
guided walks since, during the summer mainly and on request. Also indicated
is the site they specialised in and their area of interest/expertise.
- Jim Cullinane (Stradbally, local and mining history)
- Eileen Power (Ballydwane)
- Bruce MacDonald (the entire Copper Coast and the mining heritage)
- Mary Murray (Boatstrand and Dunabrattin, local history)
- Kathryn Curran (Kilfarrasy)
- Rita Byrne (Kilfarrasy and Fenor Bog, seaweed, birdlife, wildlife in general)
- Donal Lehane (Dunhill Castle)

Three new people contacted the Geopark in 2008 to join the team:
- Fran Keating
- Aine O'Brien-Farrell
- Sean O'Connor
The training was organised for the 14th and 15th June. Most of the members of
the original team joined us at some stage during the week end to meet but also
share knowledge and experience.
