The Hungry Rock and Hawk's Rock
The Hungry Rock is situated in the Ox Mountains on the side of
the road connecting Coolaney and Ballasodare. It is said to have
got it's name from the number of people who died on the road
during the famineof the 1840's. According to legend whoever
throws a stone onto this rock will not know hunger on his journey.
In famine times it was used as a bread table for sharing food to
starving people
A large rock on the top of the hill closeby is called
Hawk's Rock. There was a horseshoe print in a stone in the centre
of the road here, it is said that this footprint was made by St.
Patrick's horse when he leaped from a nearby cliff onto the road.
Alas modern tar and chip road dressing has erased the footprint.
