The description of the demons and their
involvement with St. Michael, as painted in the fresco, refer to the Bible,Revelation,
XII, 7-9:
" And there was
war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon: and the dragon fought his
angels:
And prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven:
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the devil, and Satan, which
deceiveth the whole world:
he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
Revelation XIII, 2, almost exactly describes the upper dragon:
" And the beast
that I saw was like unto a leopard,
and his feet were as the feet of a bear,
and his mouth as the mouth of a lion". "
