DUNDALK FC PLAYER PROFILES

2000/2001

BRIAN MC KENNA

GOALKEEPER

Joined club at start of 2000/2001 season from Finn Harps where he played in three FAI Cup finals. Also a former St Patricks Athletic keeper who has experience in European competition.

JOHN CONNOLLY

GOALKEEPER

In his second season with the club after joining in the early part of the 1999/2000 season. Had a spell in Oriel earlier in his careerand lists Kilkenny as a previous club, along with brief spells at Shels and Bohs. Will have to battle with Brian McKenna for his first team spot

DAVID CRAWLEY

DEFENDER

Left back, appointed captain after the departures of Paul Whelan and Noel Melvin. From the town has a good left foot and scores many free kicks. Also the clubs penalty taker and is now one of the longest serving players on the staff, despite his relatively young age. Definitely a Premier Division class full back

PADRAIG STAUNTON

DEFENDER

Injury prone 19 year old, brother of Irish international Steve. Centre back who is comfortable on the ball but suffered from injury in the 1999/2000 season and will have to try and establish himself in the first team. Will challenge for starting place in centre half position

PADRAIG GOLLOGLEY

DEFENDER

Tall central defender, who had problems with previous manager Terry Eviston and will be hoping to start afresh under Martin Murray. Having waited a long while he finally made the breakthrough to the first team in the 1998/99 season and has his best chance yet this season to secure a permanent starting role

IAN HILL

DEFENDER

Experienced former Drogheda, Cliftonville and Crusaders right back who can also play as sweeper or in central defence. Joined the club along with manager Martin Murray and will compete with John Whyte for the right back slot. Won promotion with Drogheda in the past

ARRON CALLAGHAN

DEFENDER

Centre back who had a long career cross channel with Crewe one of the clubs he played for after leaving Shelbourne for England. On his return home played in the North and had a short spell managing Crusaders before a move to Pats. That didn't work out and joined Dundalk for £1,000 after a loan spell with Glenavon.

DONAL BROUGHAN

DEFENDER

Experienced Dubliner. Had a long career with Bohs, with a brief spell with Shels halfway through it. Left Bohs to join Pats in '99 but was not popular with Pats fans who singled him out for abuse. Joined Dundalk in October 2000, and marked his debut with a goal against Waterford. Can play at right back or central defence

JOHN WHYTE

DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER

Established himself in the right back role in the 1999/2000 season after joining soon after the appointment of Terry Eviston. Combative player who was sent off twice in his first season at the club and now faces competition after the signing of Ian Hill. Popular with the fans, the Faughart man made his return to the club from Newry after leaving Oriel in 1993 for a career in the North

TOMMY BYRNE

DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER

Former Irish under 21 international, who had a spell with Chelsea in his teens, playing one game for them before joining FC Boom of Belgium. Then came back to Ireland to play for Bohs where he had a long spell before joining Shels before the 99/2000 season. Had a brief spell there before spending rest of the season on loan with Sligo. Started 2000/2001 season with Kilkenny, until joining Dundalk in October. Can play at left back or left midfield but played his early games for Dundalk in the middle of a five man midfield

PADDY QUINN

DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER

18 year old versatile player who has represented the eircom League at centre back. Made his breakthrough to the team in the second half of last season as a right back, but has featured at left wing as well even though his best position is thought to be in central defence. Sure to play many games in a variety of positions in the 2000/2001 season

JOHN FLANAGAN

DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER

22 year old Drogheda man who lists Home Farm and his hometown club as former clubs. Played at right back there but played in central midfield for Dundalk in the 1999/2000 season. Popular because of his aggressive style, Martin Murray has been using the player on the right side of midfield as competition for places in central midfield hots up

EOIN MULLEN

DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER

Experienced ex Rovers and Bohs left sided player. Joined from Kilkenny in the first half of 2000/2001 season. Can play on the left side of defence or midfield, and also has played at centre half. Has been employed mostly on the left side of midfield by Martin Murray

GREG O'DOWD

MIDFIELDER

In his second spell with the club after joining before 2000/2001 season from local arch rivals Drogheda United. His first spell at Dundalk was early in the nineties when he played as a left winger before moving on to Shamrock Rovers and then up North where he played for Crusaders and made his name there as a central midfielder. Features in that role for Dundalk now

DAVID HOEY

MIDFIELDER

Burst onto the scene back in 1997 for the relegation playoff against Waterford United and has been a prominent squad member since. Progress was curtailed by serious illness back in 1998 which meant he hardly played any games at all in 1999 and has had a serious effect on his game. Still trying to find his best form, and if he does will be a serious asset to the side

LIAM DUNNE

MIDFIELDER

Small combative midfielder who started his career at Bohs before a move to Scottish Premier side St Johnstone where he spent a few seasons. Moved back to the North where he played for Portadown and subsequently at Crusaders under Martin Murray. Joined Dundalk shortly after Murrays appointment, and had the chance of moving to Premier Division side Longford at the time. Experienced yet at 28 has a good few years ahead of him yet

JOHN SHARKEY

MIDFIELDER

Pint sized right winger, who has never really held down a regular starting place. Best moment so far for Dundalk was a last minute goal to win in Tolka against Shels in relegation season. Threatened to pin down a starting place in the 1999/2000 season but did not feature regularly in latter half of season. Will be looking for another chance to show what he can do.

DAVID WARD

STRIKER

Enigmatic striker who has bundles of ability. Never scores as many goals as he should but is still a great provider of goals and is the player most opposing teams try to take out of a game. Has endless amounts of energy and if he could improve his finishing in front of goal could be an awesome player, however if this does not happen maybe a wide role could be his in the long term with competition for places up front mounting

DAVID MARTIN

STRIKER

Young striker who promised a lot when scoring five goals in the latter half of the 1998/1999 season. However, things did not work out for him under Terry Eviston and barely featured in 1999/2000 season. Having fallen down the pecking order he will be looking for more first team opportunities in the 2000/2001 season. Pace is his biggest asset, but he is also a good finisher

DEREK DELANY

MIDFIELDER/STRIKER

Skilful player who can play in midfield or up front, and is a very good passer of the ball. Has featured in the side sporadically since returning home from Ipswich, and seems to be more of a central midfield player now. Temperamental at times, but definitely a player who could be a leading figure at Oriel in the coming years if he develops with age. Squanders possession too easily, but if he stops doing that could be worthy of a starting place on a more regular basis

ANTO REILLY

STRIKER

After scoring 50 goals in the Summer League was given his chance by Terry Eviston and repaid the then managers faith with several crucial goals in the 1999/2000 season. Always seemed to score these goals in the role of substitute and seems to have more effect on the game when introduced sometime in the second half .Quite likely that he will continue in this role in the 2000/2001 season

MARTIN REILLY

STRIKER

Joined at the start of the 2000/2001 season from Crusaders, because of the appointment of Martin Murray. Was snapped up by Brian Kerr for St Pats in the mid nineties from Ashtownvilla and immediately made an impact, finishing the Leagues top scorer within a few seasons and also won two League medals in his time at Pats before leaving to join Crusaders on the Bosman ruling. A pacy forward who scores lots of goals, he is a big asset to have in the rough and tumble world of Division One

JOHN RYAN

STRIKER

Experienced striker, best known for scoring hat-trick in FAI Cup final in 1990 for Bray Wanderers. Joined Dundalk from Bray midway through the 2000/2001 season, after a second spell at Bray. Before that he had spells at St Pats, Drogheda and Bohemians. Can hold the ball up well, and brings other players into the game
