First team squad for season 2001/2

JOHN CONNOLLY

GOALKEEPER

Now established first choice keeper at the club, after joining as cover in the 1999/2000 season. Spent first half of 2000/2001 on the bench, but won his place back by the end of the season. Former Bohs, Shels and Kilkenny keeper

JUSTIN O'NEILL

GOALKEEPER

Signed in Summer of 2001 from Drogheda United as cover for John Connolly. Has spent most of his Drogheda career as reserve keeper. Earned his move to Dundalk after impressive performance for Drogheda in the penultimate game of the 2000/2001 season in Oriel Park

DAVID CRAWLEY

DEFENDER

Left back, appointed captain after the departures of Paul Whelan and Noel Melvin. From the town has a good left foot and scores many free kicks. Also the clubs penalty taker and is now one of the longest serving players on the staff, despite his relatively young age. Lifted the First Division trophy in Cobh in May of 2001

STEPHEN MC GUINNESS

DEFENDER

Joined Dundalk in Summer of 2001 from St Pats, where he won two League medals. Central defender, renowned as a great competitor and motivator. His signing inspired confidence amongst Dundalk fans that the club had what it takes to attract the top players for the Premier Division

BRYAN MC CRYSTAL

DEFENDER

Former Leeds trainee from Bellurgan. Played with Dundalk as a 16 year old in the League Cup before leaving for Leeds. Returned to Ireland last season and played with Newry Town. Move to Dundalk was inevitable and it came about in the Summer of 2001. Injured in game against Shels and now out for the season

ARRON CALLAGHAN

DEFENDER

Centre back who had a long career cross channel with Crewe one of the clubs he played for after leaving Shelbourne for England. On his return home played in the North and had a short spell managing Crusaders before a move to Pats. That didn't work out and joined Dundalk for £1,000 after a loan spell with Glenavon. Now player-coach, unlikely to play as much in the Premier Division

DONAL BROUGHAN

DEFENDER

Experienced Dubliner. Had a long career with Bohs, with a brief spell with Shels halfway through it. Left Bohs to join Pats in '99 but was not popular with Pats fans who singled him out for abuse. Joined Dundalk in October 2000, and marked his debut with a goal against Waterford. Earned a contract for the 2001/2 season, and has now settled in a centre back position after spending most of his career at full back

JOHN WHYTE

DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER

Established himself in the right back role in the 1999/2000 season after joining soon after the appointment of Terry Eviston. Started last season on the bench but was first choice by the end of the season again. Popular with the fans, the Faughart man made his return to the club from Newry after leaving Oriel in 1993 for a career in the North

JOHN FLANAGAN

DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER

22 year old Drogheda man who lists Home Farm and his hometown club as former clubs. Played at right back there but played in central midfield for Dundalk in the 1999/2000 season. Popular because of his aggressive style, Martin Murray has been using the player on the right side of midfield as competition for places in central midfield hots up

DAVID HOEY

DEFENDER/MIDFIELDER

Burst onto the scene back in 1997 for the relegation playoff against Waterford United and has been a prominent squad member since. Progress was curtailed by serious illness back in 1998 which meant he hardly played any games at all in 1999 and has had a serious effect on his game. Reverting to right back role for the Premier Division

LIAM DUNNE

MIDFIELDER

Small combative midfielder who started his career at Bohs before a move to Scottish Premier side St Johnstone where he spent a few seasons. Moved back to the North where he played for Portadown and subsequently at Crusaders under Martin Murray. Joined Dundalk shortly after Murrays appointment, and had the chance of moving to Premier Division side Longford at the time. Experienced yet at 28 has a good few years ahead of him yet

CIARAN KAVANAGH

MIDFIELDER

Local man who came home after 10 seasons with UCD in the Summer of 2001. Central midfielder, respected throughout the League, his experience is a great addition to the side. Sampled European football with UCD, and still only 28 years old, he is likely to be a permanent fixture in the midfield over the coming seasons

STUART CONNOLLY

MIDFIELDER

Central midfielder who joined Dundalk in the Summer of 2001 from Athlone. Former trainee at Tranmere who had brief spells with Bray and Shels upon his return from England. Spent the 2000/01 season at Athlone in their failed promotion bid, but impressed in the four games against Dundalk which prompted Martin Murray to sign him. Combative player, a good passer of the ball

JAMES KEDDY

MIDFIELDER

Left winger who won the double with Shelbourne in the year 2000, and also lists UCD and Derry City as former clubs. Joined Dundalk after promotion from the First Division in 2001, choosing the Lilywhites over several other Premier Division clubs

JONATHAN PRIZEMAN

MIDFIELDER

Joined Dundalk in Summer of 2001. Now in his second spell at the club, as he spent half a season on loan back in late nineties. Was deployed as a right back then, but now playing in a more familar midfield role. Joined from Shels after a season at Tolka where he couldn't get a regular starting place. Dundalk fans will remember him best from his season at Kilkenny in 1999/2000 when he scored several crucial goals as Kilkenny pipped Dundalk to the playoff spot

JOHN SHARKEY

MIDFIELDER

Pint sized right winger, who has never really held down a regular starting place. Best moment so far for Dundalk was a last minute goal to win in Tolka against Shels in relegation season. Threatened to pin down a starting place in the 1999/2000 season but did not feature regularly in latter half of season. Missed the 2000/1 season through injury

CHRIS LAWLESS

MIDFIELDER

Local teenager who broke into the first team squad in 2000/01 and made two sub appearances. Highly regarded at the club and could make the breakthrough to more regular action sometime in 2001/02

DAVID WARD

MIDFIELDER/STRIKER

Enormously talented player, who can play both up front and on either wing. Burst onto the scene back in 1997/98 as a teenager, and had a difficult time living up to those heights in the following seasons. Scored some crucial goals last season from a left wing position, but the arrival of James Keddy means he will be plying his trade up front in the 2001/2 season. When he is on form, he is fantastic to watch and has the ability to destroy any Premier Division defence

DAVID MARTIN

STRIKER

Young striker who promised a lot when scoring five goals in the latter half of the 1998/1999 season. However, things did not work out for him under Terry Eviston and barely featured in 1999/2000 season. Failed to make an impact last year despite scoring plenty of goals for the under 21's. Will hope to figure more in 2001/02

GARY HAYLOCK

STRIKER

Joined club in December 2001 from Glentoran where he his goalscoring form had left them top of the Irish League. Signed with the mission of keeping Dundalk in the Premier Division and scored in home debut against Monaghan. Bradford born Haylock has a successful career behind him, and at the age of 30 has plenty to offer still. Scored plenty of goals for Shels in early 90's and continued up North where he has scored for several goals. Career highlight must have been reached UEFA Cup Quarter Finals when he featured regularly on the scoresheet for Greek side Panionis, managed by Ronnie Whelan. Great signing for the club

ANTO REILLY

STRIKER

After scoring 50 goals in the Summer League was given his chance by Terry Eviston and repaid the then managers faith with several crucial goals in the 1999/2000 season. Played the same role in 2000/1 season, and has gone on loan to Drogheda for the 2001/2 season. Fan favourite who is sure to return to the club and score goals

MARTIN REILLY

STRIKER

20 goal hero of the promotion season, breaking a long standing Dundalk record in the process. Great touches and very pacy, Reilly is a fantastic player to have at the club. Joined at the start of the 2000/2001 season from Crusaders, because of the appointment of Martin Murray. Snapped up by Brian Kerr for St Pats in the mid nineties from non league and immediately made an impact, finishing the Leagues top scorer within a few seasons and also won two League medals in his time at Pats before leaving to join Crusaders on the Bosman ruling.

JOHN RYAN

STRIKER

Experienced striker, best known for scoring hat-trick in FAI Cup final in 1990 for Bray Wanderers. Joined Dundalk from Bray midway through the 2000/2001 season, after a second spell at Bray. Before that he had spells at St Pats, Drogheda and Bohemians. Can hold the ball up well, and brings other players into the game. Played a vital part in 2000/1 promotion campaign

MICK O'BYRNE

STRIKER

Another player who spent most of his career at UCD before joining Dundalk in 2001, apart from a short six month spell at Kilkenny City. UCD's all time leading goalscorer, O'Byrne is a former Irish under 21 international who was once regarded as one of the brightest prospects in the country when he partnered Jason Sherlock for UCD. Injured in pre season and misses the whole year
