Joe Crawford, Society president for 1999 is the speaker at this year’s dinner. A collector of historical recordsrelating to county Fermanagh and an entertaining speaker, Joe is particularly knowledgeable about the history of the Lisbellaw area, including Belle Isle and Inishmore. He is the author of The Hard Rocks, a history of this locality, which is now out of print.

Lectures & Outings

Clones, Saturday 8 April

A one-day conference on ‘Early Christian & Medieval Society in the Erne Basin’ will be held in the CanalStores. Marking 1500 years since the foundation of Clones abbey, this conference will feature contributionsfrom noted archaeologists and historians. Lectures will begin at 9.30am. Clogher – Sunday 21 May

Jack Johnston will lead a walking tour of the episcopal city of Clogher, showing (amongst other sites) thecathedral, the bishop’s palace and the workhouse. Assemble Clogher cathedral at 3pm.

Coach outing to Lecale – Sunday 4 June

This year’s coach outing is to county Down, where Dr Finbar McCormick will lead a tour of thearchaeological and historical sites in the barony of Lecale. There is a limit of 53 people for this tour.

Travel will be by Ulsterbus luxury coach (Fare Irl£15)

This promises to be a most interesting tour, led by Finbar McCormick, Professor of Archaeology at QueensUniversit Belfast. On reaching Inch Abbey, time will be provided for people to eat their lunch. As there are no convenient tea rooms, those participating on the tour might like to bring a flask of tea or coffee! On the return journey an evening meal will be taken at Diamond’s. Warrenpoint. Members travelling from Monaghan are reminded to bring sterling.

Ballybay– Sunday 18 June

Revd David Nesbitt, author of the recently-published Full Circle, will lead a tour through the Presbyterian heartland of mid-Monaghan, including First Ballybay, Derryvalley, Aghadrumkeen and Cahans churches.Meet at Derryvalley crossroads at 3pm.

North Louth– Sunday 3 September

Larry McDermott will lead what promises to be an interesting tour of north Louth, including the superbsouterrain at Donoughmore and the impressive Norman fortification at Castleroche. Assemble, car park,Patrick Kavanagh centre, Inniskeen at 2.45pm.
