Simmental
Description
The Simmental is very well-known, not only to those who like walking in the Swiss mountains : it is among the most widely distributed cow of all breeds in the world.
The coat of the Simmental is yellowish-brown or
red with characteristic white markings. Its long face and horns usually stay white. The
cows are large and powerful (their weight is around 1.650 pounds) and the calves weigh
about 100 pounds at birth ; they are hardy and have a good growth rate.
The emphasis is on milk yield and stock is selected on the basis of milk production. Simmentals give a milk with a high percentage of butterfat, which is very valuable in areas producing butter. |
They continue to be used as draft animals in areas where mechanisation has not yet taken place. This is why the Simmental was known, in former times, to be a true triple-purpose breed : milk - beef - traction.
It's other qualities are : good mother, a docile disposition, and ruggedness.
