 Fitzgerald

The Irish name Fitzpatrick is not of Norman origin as the 'fitz' part of the name might suggest but is derived from the native Gaelic Mac Giolla Pádraig Sept. The name literally means 'a devotee of Saint Patrick'. The Sept was located in the County Laoise region. Gilpatrick and Kilpatrick are variants.

The Irish name O'Hanlon in Ireland is derived from the native Gaelic O' hAnluain Sept, taken from a Gaelic word meaning 'champion'. The Sept was based mainly in the Province of Ulster although it can now also be associated with Munster where many descendants of the Sept can still be found.

The Irish name Fitzgerald is of Anglo-Norman origin having been brought into the country in the twelfth century. The main Septs bearing the name were called Mac Gearailt and were located in Counties Kerry and Kildare. The name is now widespread in its ancestral Counties as well as in Counties Dublin, Cork and Limerick
