Transparent and Opaque Materials
March 2003

We learned about transparent and opaque materials.
To test if a material is opaque or transparent we got a shoebox. We cut a hole in the side of the shoebox and turned on a torch and put it inside the shoebox. We put the lid back on the box so light could escape. We then put different types of material over the hole to test if it was opaque or transparent.
We tested cling film, black card, tin foil, white card and nylon. If the light shone through it was a transparent material. If the light did not shine through it was an opaque material.
We found that nylon, cling film and white card let the light shine through so it was transparent. The black card and tin foil did not let the light shine through so it was opaque. We had great fun doing the experiment.
