The kingfisher has black wings, yellow feet, yellow and orange breast with cream,
green, black and red speckled over his body. There are green reeds and blue
seawater in the background. The bird looks to be alone. He doesn’t look happy.
There are green lily pads nearby. There is no movement. It is like the bird is
motionless. The brush strokes are small and thin. I think Van Gogh is saying that
one can paint a simple painting with simple colours and it can still be magnificent.
Niamh In this painting there is a lovely kingfisher among the reeds and grass.
There are lots of different tones and colours such as green, yellow and blue.
There is movement in the grass. Maybe the wind is blowing in it. The atmosphere in this painting is warm and sunny. The sea is in the background of the painting. The artist used both big and small strokes. I think the artist is trying to tell us that the bird is on his own because all the other birds are hibernating in other countries. I think this painting is beautiful and I would say it’s worth millions of Euro.
In this painting there is a lovely kingfisher relaxing among the reeds at the
bank of the river. He may be spotting a little fish that he would like to catch.
There is a lovely contrast of warm autumn colours. There are different shades of
yellows, greens, light blues and just a stroke of black for the kingfisher itself.
The kingfisher appears to be still but the reeds seem to be slightly swaying in the
breeze to the right of the painting. The perspective is simple. Everything is close
up. There are some big strokes used on the lake but very small delicate strokes on the
kingfisher. I think that the artist is trying to say that even during winter one can
find some peace by the riverside. The painting makes me feel relaxed and warm. If I
could rename this it I would rename it ‘Peace by the Riverside’.
