Appreciation of 'Starry Night' by Van Gogh

Stars and lights of the buildings light up the city and the sky. It looks like a big black cloud of smoke is covering a part of the city and sky. It might be from a building that’s on fire. The painting is made up of dark colours with lighted colours dotted here and there. The colours are blended very well. There is movement in the painting. I think there is a wind blowing and the smoke is spreading. The atmosphere is sad because it is a cold and dark painting. The buildings are very small in the distance and the clouds of smoke seem to be up close. I think Van Gogh is trying to tell us that he is sitting in his window and he is warm but the city is cold.

When the people of the village see the starry sky, they know that God is watching over them and that they don’t have to be scared anymore. The artist uses yellow, orange, black, green and grey. Everything in the painting is still. There is a happy atmosphere about this painting. I think this painting is a great way to express your feelings.

It is a very dull dark night but there are swirls in the sky. It is a very still scene but the swirls and stars seem to be moving. The black flame is up close and the mountains and houses are in the background. There are big strokes used in the swirls and small strokes in the houses. I think that it is a sad picture and that the artist is trying to tell us that he is sad.
