Clann na nGael

Player of the Year - 1992

Over the years the 'Clann na nGael Player of the Year Award' has become a very coveted prize in the Club and such is the standard of performance within the Club that only a consistent extremely high level of performance throughout the year places a player in real contention.

Although 1992 was not one of Clann's more successful years particularly on the championship front, there were none the less noteworthy performances from many Clann individuals which ensured yet another very close contest for this year's award.

This year's winner, like previous winners, has not only had an exceptional past twelve months but has also been a predominant member of Clann's success story over the past 10 years or more, since his first Senior County Championship Medal at the beginning of the last decade. However, he had made his mark as a potential star of the future much earlier and as a young footballer picked up his first county championship medals in 1978 and 1979 playing a key role in Clann's first two Under-16 County Titles.

Since then he has never looked back and went from strength to strength to win his first of 10 Senior County Football Championship Medals in 1981 when still only a minor, the same year collecting a Connaught Minor Football Championship Medal with Roscommon. Throughout the eighties he consolidated his position on the Clann na nGael senior team consistently turning in magnificent displays when most needed. As Clann rolled on he remained a key figure in the setup and although in recent years has become an almost automatic choice for the Clann defence he has made his name throughout the field of play. While many will associate him with the number 7 jersey, it is interesting to note that he never lined out in that position in any of his four All-Ireland Final appearances. As a 23 year old captain he led Clann to 3-in-a-row of Roscommon and Connaught Club Championships in 1986 and into their 2nd All-Ireland Final in March '87.

Now at the age of 29 he has a wealth of medals and trophies which include:-

as well as Minor and Senior Connaught Championships with Roscommon in 1981 and 1990 respectively.

As the years slowly pass by consistency has become more and more a part of his game and this is exemplified by the fact that he now collects this award for the second successive year, an indication of his true worth to the Club. The '1992 Clann na nGael Player of the Year' is ...
