MAIRE BRENNAN: Whisper to the Wild Water (Word)


BRENNAN, the ethereal singer in Clannad, mixes ambient keyboards with Celtic fiddles, uillean pipes and her flawless harp playing on this tranquil, atmospheric album. Sung in English and Gaelic, Brennan's songs can be obscure and enigmatic. But she is at her best on the shimmering title track and the dance-influenced Hard To Break The Seal. Her cover version of Peter Gabriel's Don't Give Up, a duet with Michael McDonald, stresses her poppier side, while Life echoes the soft-rock of fellow Irish stars the Corrs.
