Location

For those of you that do not know where we are, Clara is located at the extreme tip of North Monaghan in the Parish of Errigal Truagh in the beautiful wooded Blackwater Valley, in the Republic of Ireland.

We sit right on the border with our friends in Northern Ireland. Clara has been deeply affected by the conflict in Northern Ireland, which spilled over constantly into our area. From Moybridge on the N 2 westwards to Greagh at Lough More, a distance of 5 miles, there are 6 border crossings all of which were closed except Moybridge. All of the crossings are now open and a large volume of traffic travels these roads, with the added attraction of cheaper diesel prices.

Clara is a very small community, with most of the trade in the area comming from the farming industry, with cattle taking up a large proportion.

The nucleus of the community centres around the Parish Hall, handball alley now unused, school, pre-school playgroup, post office, Church with community car parking, public toilets which have recently been developed and extended. Also Sherry's shop, a former R.I.C. barracks and the Famine Soup Kitchen which has recently closed thus leaving a gap in the area.
