THE "DAILY?" MESSAGE OF THE KEEPERS

Monday, March 19th, 2001

Hello friends from the Clare Island Lighthouse preservation society

Here we go again with an update of our not so daily message. Having had more than our fair share of slagging over the last couple of days about  the lack of  news from Clare Island,  we have decided to do something about it and there you are, hot from the press all the latest bits and pieces from "The Rock"

If we didn t have the usual helpings of winter storms,  the snow and sleet during February more than compensated for it. All in all we had a dry winter but a cold one with   prevailing easterly winds As a result not many colds and flues around but a lot of red noses.  With the weather removed from the usual topic we could concentrate on the emergency.  All the talk was about Foot and mouth which hit England with such a vengeance  Sofar so good for Ireland having managed to keep the virus out.. As we speak  restrictions are being lifted and  life as we know it , slowly returns. But they were uneasy weeks nevertheless  with the  tourist season around the corner..

Saint Patrick came and went.Almost everywhere a lowkey affair with the usual parades cancelled. Not so on Clare Island where the decendants of  the Pirate Queen   staged a world class performance with ten floats participating in the parade.   The Mirr space station ran away with  the honors   Runners up were The finger and noses disease and third Clare Island  airbase. . But as with the Olympic spirit, it is not only the winning that counts but participating that matters. So a big bravo for The Vikings,   E.R, Council Workers,  3 Stooges,  Poor Farmer,  Saint Patrick and his wife and last but not least A common farmer.  So , as you can see, on Clare Island we dont need the big hipe of Dublin or The Big Apple to have a bit of Craic...

On the lighthouse itself it is battle stations...We got around our spring cleaning and the rooms got a lick of paint as well. It is still a bit early to attack the outside walls although a valliant attempt has been made on the iron gates. Three done, four to go.

So, I think we have redeemed ourselves, and hopefully we ll keep on the right track and keep you informed on the going ons   on The Rock and Alcatraz.

Have a nice time and till the next time

Greetings from the edge of the world.

Monica and Robert
