NDURE

Contents

Introduction

NDURE is the latest in a long line of exploits that allow the execution of a homebrew application (in most cases, a BIOS loader or kernel patcher that further opens the security up and adds mod features). It combines the features of font-based exploits like "Bert and Ernie Reloaded", and UDE that ran from power on but didn't allow running the original MS dashboard, with those of the audio-based trigger exploits which required the user to input a series of commands to activate the mod from the MS dashboard but worked fine on Xbox Live.

Krayzie's NDURE Installer

Krayzie's NDURE Installer is a game save based softmod installer that uses NDURE as an initial exploit, Nkpatcher as a kernel patcher and either EvolutionX or UnleashX as a dashboard. It was the first easy-to-use installer to take advantage of the features that NDURE and Nkpatcher offer. This guide uses the 1.0 version because it contains all the files necessary for installation and maintenance on the memory card, unlike 1.1.1 which has maintenance functions added through FTP after installation.

Installer v1.0

Once you're in the installer, you should have no problem figuring out how to do the rest. The next steps are described in the installer itself. But just in case you run into problems, here are detailed instructions.

Directions
  1. Select “1st backup eeprom” then “Backup eeprom”. NDURE will boot EvolutionX with a menu item to backup your EEPROM. After you select backup eeprom, return to the main menu.
  2. At this point I recommend FTPing into your xbox and downloading E:\backups\, which contains your EEPROM backup.
  3. Next, select “Install NDURE softmod". Another option will come up. The top option explains what they both mean but most likely you’ll be using nkpatcher 06. Next you choose the dashboard you want to use, EvoX is really old and deprecated so I recommend choosing UnleashX. Ndure warns you that it will scan for the presence of files needed for the dashboard; if you don't have MS dash 5960, it will cancel out of the installation.
  4. If your dashboard checks out, the installer will check for the EEPROM backup and take one last confirmation. The installation goes through a lot of beeps and pauses so be sure not to turn your xbox off until it says that the process is done.
  5. After it is done installing the core package, it will tell you to remove the game and reboot, but it will turn off the xbox for you. Turn the xbox back on with the eject button and take out the disk.
  6. Your only option here is to press A so just press A. The shadow C function will hide all your important dashboard files behind a fake C image that shows only the normal MSDashboard. This protects your xbox from security risks ranging from updaters to little brothers and sisters. Your xbox is now idiot proof so long as you don’t delete the exploited gamesave or start deleting things from inside the gamesave (the only state where your real C drive is exposed).
  7. Your xbox is now modded! If you didn’t before, FTP into your xbox and backup your eeprom and C drive. Just grab the folder E:\backups\.
