Trim Castle is the largest and one of the most important Norman military constructions in Ireland. Work began around 1172 and the building was completed with the central tower in the 1220s. Its well-deserved reputation as the king of Irish castles rests upon its imposing curtain walls enclosing over three acres, its fine gatehouses and its 25-metre high stone keep mounted on a Norman motte.

If time permits we will visit the ruins of Newtown Abbey in the afternoon.
