Kilkerrin - Clonberne Ceangal help to repay Famine debt to Choctaw Indians

Paidí Delaney receives a cheque from Gerry Walsh and Pauline Ronayne of Kilkerrin - Clonberne Community Ceangal.

Back in 1847 when Ireland was very badly hit as a result of the famine the Choctaw people in Oklahoma collected $170.00 for Irish Famine Relief (in today's terms this would equate to approx €5,000.00). Kilkerrin Clonberne Community Ceangal Group have reciprocated that generosity in some small way by donating €500.00 to these Choctaw people towards flood relief, as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

Their plight was highlighted by Paidí Delaney of Oranmore in a letter to the editor of The Tuam Herald recently. The Choctaw people of Mississippi have been hit especially hard by the Hurricane. They have been unable to get fuel for their emergency vehicles to carry out the necessary clean up and repairs. Many are living in shelters and the elderly are refusing to leave their homes for fear of relocation. A natural fear as many were forced off their land in the South-Eastern United States in the 1930’s and relocated to what is now Oklahoma.

Anyone who would like to help can make a donation to: Account number 12669537, Bank of Ireland, Oranmore, Sort Code 90-40-34.
