CLONBERNE VILLAGE RENEWAL

In 1998 Clonberne Community Development were successful in obtaining an "Urban and Village Renewal Scheme". This Scheme was to prove of huge benefit to the parish.
The Scheme was sponsored through Galway County Council. Prior to the Scheme being granted the Council carried out a survey of the area, and the following is extracted from their report:
"As with many of the villages in this year's phase of Urban and Village Renewal, there is no obvious structural element, forming part of the village fabric in need of renewal. As with other like villages, it is hoped to build on elements, e.g. stone walling commenced under previous and current FAS/Community Employment Schemes. The village, although situated in an area of flat landscape is in an area where estate (small) houses existed - with a resulting pleasant "treed" landscape with good stone walling. It is hoped to re-echo this in the proposed plans for the village area"
There were two main areas in this Scheme. The first was to redefine and enhance the Square, which was done very successfully with the introduction of a new enlarged and planted feature. The second was the large open space on the southern approach to the village. As this ground was left barren it was decided to plant trees, shrubs, and lawns here. The provision of benches was also requested.
As can be seen from the pictures below alot of good work was carried out, and is still been added to under various other Schemes.
