Friends of the children of Chernobyl
|
|
The Friends of the Children of Chernobyl came to Sligo in 1995 as a result of a group of children, affected by the nuclear disaster, who visited Sligo
accompanied by their hosts from the Longford group. When we first started we brought children from all over Belarus. However in the second year we were
introduced to Belousha school which is located in the Stolin District in Southern Belarus. We have brought over 200 children from the school to Ireland
and plans are well under way to bring more children this year. We try to help the school with material resources such as a photocopier, repairs and
educational equipment. We also help some children in the village who have mental and physical disabilities with medicine, nappies, etc. Two years ago we
were introduced by the National Chairperson to Moldkovichi Internat for "slow learners". They need almost everything. We have supported the school with
clothing and educational supplies and plan this year to do a lot of work in this particular schoo as we have now built a relationship.
