Crafts Many monks were great at arts such as stonework metalwork and writing great books (such as the Book of the Dun Cow). These books are magnificent on the inside and many on the outside also. It was not only the monks who were so talented in book making, but some of the local people also who contributed these great art works. Many were contributed as contributions to the monastery in return for prayers to be said for them.
