The Anglo-Irish invasion is the beginning of Ireland's eight centuries of conflict with England. And stragely enough it was all over a woman. Dermot MacMurrough, king of Leinster, seduced the wife of another king. Her name was Devorgilla and though she returned to her husband after a few months he was less than happy. MacMurrough fearing for his life fled to Europe. In England he secured the help of a Norman called Strongbow. Strongbow and his army invaded in 1169 and began England's occupancy of Ireland. Dervorgilla, penitent for what her actions were causing, had "Nuns Church" in Clonmacnoise restored. The remains of this church are one of the finest existing examples of Irish Ramanesque architecture. In 1171 King Henry II of England established a base in Ireland around Dublin called the Pale. For the next two centuries much of England's influence was limited to this area.
