Making the High Crosses.

How did the monks make the high crosses? First the stone was brought up the river from Co. Clare. The stone was put in a boat and was brought up the river to where the monks were waiting but how was it moved?

The stone was put on a pulley and was moved in to the boat.

The next step was to work out their designs on a piece of bone and then they were ready to work on the stone. They then started making pictures and designs.

On the North Cross they put the life of Jesus and St. Kieran. On the Southern Cross they did Celtic designs. Well when the crosses were finished it was all worth the time and strength the monks put into it.
