The River Shannon

19/10/99

In the photograph you can see the River Shannon.

It is in flood. It floods the callows around this time every year.

It is bad news because all the land there gets covered in water.

This area is know as the Garbh Inch.

Nearly every year the flood goes onto the road.

Then we have to travel a road called the Toher or the river through the bog.

We know a man who works at the lock gates in Athlone.

We phoned him on Friday to see the level of the river.

In September the upper level was 6ft 9” and the lower level was 7ft 2”

On Friday 15/10/99 the upper level was 8ft5’’and the lower level was 11ft9’’

By the way Clonown gets its name from the river. Cluain/Meadow and Abhann /river

Come on a walk to the Shannon Callows.
